Chat GPT’s Hockey Fiasco!

So today I was brainstorming with a friend some ideas for a broadcast show that he is going to be doing for one of his classes during the spring semester and we were doing some research with Chat GPT to gather some ideas and information quickly.

We decided to ask it if I (Caleb Freund) would be a good option for a contestant on his show, giving it no info about who I was and seeing what it would say. Well, it ended up getting who I was correct. For the most part… It gathered that I was a student at Liberty, who wrote for the Liberty Champion, and that I was a journalist and videographer. That’s great (Although sort of creepy, but all that info is public, so I’ll allow it) But then after questioning it more about different roles with the show, it ends up saying that I play as a defender for the Liberty University Division 1 Hockey Team (And this show we were brainstorming for was not a sports show). I definitely do not, but we just assumed maybe that there was a player named Caleb Freund on the team. We ran with it for a little while and asked how the work-life balance was trying to work as a journalist, videographer, student, and Division 1 athlete. One can imagine the comedic results it outputted.

So we ended up checking the Liberty roster, and there is no Caleb Freund who has played for the Flames, nor has there ever been as far as we can tell. In fact, we pushed Chat GPT to give us a link to the player profile and it gave a link; just not one to a player that was named Caleb and not even to a player that attended Liberty. There was no correlation whatsoever.

So we continued to push Chat GPT further and one by one asked if everyone in our friend group played for Liberty Hockey. With each person it not only emphatically declared that Yes, we do each play for the team, but also what position we played in, and what division team (For those unfamiliar, Liberty has teams for 3 Divisions). It listed this along with true facts specific to us, such as specific projects we have worked on and career goals that we have public. But it was still very stuck on the fact that we all (like 5 of us) played for the Hockey team.

So we are dying of laughter at this point, and we conclude by asking if Donald Trump and Liberty President Dondi Costin played for the Hockey team. Thankfully, it got both of those correct and cited their true roles, concluding that they do not play for the Hockey team.

However, that just makes it all the more confusing why it would be so dead-set that everyone in our friend group does. There is info published about us online that it referenced several times, none of which has to do with the hockey team. Unfortunately, we do not get the luxury of being Donald or Dondi and not having our info confused by Chat GPT, but perhaps if we get famous enough, that will change.

In conclusion, be very careful what info you trust from Chat GPT. If not, you may wind up thinking one of your friends has been hiding that they are a D1 athlete from you, which would likely cause a lot of unnecessary drama (or laughs).

Until Next Time,

Caleb Freund
